From the 1st of January 2009 a BER Certificate is compulsory for all homes being sold or rented. Also, in relation to the Better Energy Homes Scheme / Insulation Grants, the SEAI are recommending a Before BER Assessment to identify the areas of improvement that will bring most benefit and an After Works BER Assessment to show the improvement to the Building Energy Rating when the work has been carried out. Since 8th June 2010 it is now mandatory to carry out an After Works BER Assessment when you apply for Better Energy Homes Scheme Grants for which you will recieve an 80 Euro Grant towards the BER.

Along with the BER certificate, you will also receive an Advisory Report which will help you to identify how you might improve the energy performance of your home.
